Harte Signs for Sunderland

The 29-year-old Republic of Ireland defender has signed a one-year contract at the Stadium of Light after impressing manager Roy Keane - his former international team-mate - during a recent trial.

Harte and Keane represented the Republic many times together during the course of Harte's 64-cap Ireland career.

The defender - nephew of another Leeds stalwart, Gary Kelly - left Elland Road in 2004 for Spain, where he joined Valencia-based club Levante. But after three years with Levante, Harte left at the expiry of his contract this summer.

He established himself as a specialist at free-kicks and penalties, netting many goals for a full-back from such set-pieces, and also scored 11 goals for the Republic.

Harte is Keane's 10th signing for Sunderland since the Black Cats won promotion in May.
